Can you think of a tool that gets more use than a kitchen knife (besides a cell phone)? So, it makes sense to have a few knives that are a joy to look at and fun to use.
The Japanese have taken the art of cutting tools far beyond any other culture. They have many specific types for very specific uses. Fortunately, they have also created versatile blades for the home kitchen so you don’t need a dozen knives to prep one meal.
All my kitchen knives are based on Japanese blade shapes. However, I create knives with both western and Japanese style handles. You can argue which handle shape is best, but I think it boils down to what looks good to you.
